Hipsters Making News

VBS.TV is known for its smart and interesting documentaries, like this example above: a miniseries about the Northern Gyre (nicknamed "Garbage Island"), a massive whirlpool of trash in the Pacific Ocean.

Whoa! Cable television network CNN announced strategic content partnerships with Vice and Sub Pop Records this morning. The move is part of an effort to broaden the viewpoints of CNN's news reporting. Content from Vice and Sub Pop will start running on CNN.com this week.

Vice co-founder Shane Smith says of the partnership:
"Most people who hear about this partnership will think, 'Vice and CNN, hmmm... That's an odd pair of bedfellows for you'. And you'd be right. The hipsters' Bible hooking up with the world's news leader is a bit odd."
Odd, perhaps, but I'm hopeful. The move is a step away from the partisan and arguably biased reporting of other cable news organizations like Fox and MSNBC. And if Vice can get more kids reading—and caring—about the news and current events, more power to them. I don't want Generation Y remembered as the group that made America a nation of stupids. —Katherine
