There isn't anyone who can tell you what a heartbreak sounds like; No one can tell you what chord progression best matches your jouney of falling in love; And no one can even come close to explain what key happiness is in. Though these feats may be impossible, there are two genres of music that have come the closest to achieving the recipe for both emotions and music – R'n'B & Soul.
R'n'B & Soul help laid the foundation for teaching audiences how to rightfully interpret feelings and struggles through the structure of song melodies. Over the decades, both genres have undergone unbelievable amounts of transformation. As years passed, the genres would stand at the base of a family tree that would grow into branches unimagineable by themselves - disco, hip hop, and house, to name a few. Still today there is major evidence of both R'n'B and Soul's influence on culture. Though both the styles have made an impact on more than half a century of music, it's early roots can be easily tucked away and accidentally forgotten.
Thankfully, record labels such as BBE have been releasing compilations for audiences everywhere to relive some of the genres' forgetten voices. One album in particular that successfully completes this task is Lost & Found: Real R'nB & Soul. The record is compiled by legends Paul Darge, who is credited as being the first DJ to bring the Northern soul scene to London, and Paul Weller, frontman for influential Mod band The Jam. Both Darge & Weller reach deep into their record crates to bring audiences 2 discs full of handpicked, soulful gems. Lost & Found: Real R'nB & Soul is the listener's private Delorean, all set and ready to travel back to the 50's & 60's.
KYLE STYLE: Five standout tracks from Lost & Found.
Unlike the series' first volume, Lost & Found: Rockabilly & Jump Blues, this new collection strictly focuses on the music stylings of early, underground black artists. Named after Darge's weekly club night, the compilation could best be described as an enjoyable audio lesson - educating its listeners on the early grooves of both dance music and ballads. It's very important to mention that the tracklisting and programming for both discs is nearly flawless. One can easily tell that Darge and Weller paid very close attention to their song selection – bringing in famed vocalists such as Tammi Terrell and Billy Watkins to notable acts like Creations and The Dells. Each song acts as the perfect segway into the next, taking the listener on a rollercoaster ride of emotion; the rollercoaster that both R'n'B & Soul was known to be.
Overall, this collection of music is capable of offering something to everyone. True, there are some tracks that might deserve the “skip” button over others, but a promise can be made that you will be able to connect yourself to majority of the selected songs. So whether you're trying to overcome a fallen romance, or just trying to search out a mixtape tune that tells that special someone exactly how you feel, Lost & Found: Real R'n'B & Soul will be there as your closest companion.
