Year Long Disaster at the Double Door

Arena rockers stuff sound into Wicker Park venue

Writhing about the stage, Daniel Davies seems to be exorcising demons. Sweat pours out of him -- a hot, loud band in a hot, loud bar. To calls of “Jimmy Page” from the audience, Davies works the fretboard of his shimmering Les Paul. The frontman of Year Long Disaster has come a long way up.

“Everything you do becomes a part of your art,” Davies says. He met bandmate Rich Mullins in the liquor aisle of an L.A. grocery store. “It’s odd to meet someone on the way down and three weeks later, we were in rehab together,” Davies says. “You have to go as low as possible before you come back up.”

Shortly after a nine-week tour of Europe, the band is in the middle of a two-week tour with Philly rockers Burning Brides. “The road is a natural place for me,” Davies says. It’s in his blood: His father, Dave Davies, defined stage presence as part of the Kinks. “I like being in a constant state of arrival,” he says.

On stage in Chicago, Davies, Mullins and drummer Brad Hargreaves (also of Third Eye Blind), have the power-trio formula down. Hargreaves keeps the rhythm on the skins, Mullins squats stoically, his base inches off the ground, and Davies throws himself all over the stage, knocking over his mic stand and throwing sweat from his long dark curls, playing cuts like “Per Qualche in Piu” and “Leda Atomica,” whose title is a Dali painting.

With a self-titled debut album under their belt, Year Long Disaster will spend the rest of the summer touring the States -- including a five-gig stint with the Foo Fighters -- before heading back to Europe for the festival circuit. They plan on cutting a new record over the winter.

Year Long Disaster roars with a liquor-drenched classic rock sound, the sort of music that has upset grandmothers for 30 years. “It’s good old-fashioned rock and roll: I was raised on it,” Davies says.
