The beginning of the closing track “Scoliosis & Astigmatism,” perfectly illustrates what Melodium (aka Laurent Girard) does so well throughout the course of the oddly affliction themed record and that is – creating looped beat patterns out of incidental sounds (in this case, someone adjusting in a chair). From there, he is able to layer on acoustic guitars, piano, and then some wind instruments and usually in that order. Check out the sounds at the beginning of “Eustachian Tubes”!
Anyone who has used Garageband knows that it’s someone typing on a keyboard while perhaps accidentally being mic-ed into an open track. It’s rather brilliant and that’s why the lackluster accompaniment can be disappointing at times once that initial WTF factor wears off. Additionally the two stabs at actually singing were ill-advised and just too timid. Still, it’s a pleasant album top to bottom, perfect for the background while reading or writing reviews.
