Lollapalooza is an interesting time in Chicago. Each year in the summer heat, one of rock’s biggest festivals descends upon the city and becomes the center of the music world for a few days. Some Chicagoans prefer to stay in all weekend, desperately avoiding the traffic and commotion. Others, along with the many folks in from out of town, dive head first into the festivities.

Electronic music in the live environment has become a tricky beast.  You’re either going to be in store for one of two things: either you’ll see the ‘DJ’ who pushes play, is backed by a fancy light show and tries harder to hype the crowd rather than turn out a well performed set.  If you’re lucky, you’ll see an actual performance - sounds being represented by visible human interactions with technology, maybe you’ll even see the artist playing synths live and if you’re really lucky, this will all still be backed by a great visual performance.  That latter scenario is what Madeon has set out to accomplish with his current Adventure tour and it couldn’t have possibly be executed any better.  Having seen his stop in Chicago at the House of Blues this past weekend, I don’t think I could’ve been more impressed with how explosive this show turned out to be.

Now, I know I’ve said some harsh words here and there about the House of Blues in past reviews. It’s always been somewhere I’ve tried to avoid frequenting, but when it was transformed into a free-for-all dance party until 5AM, my opinion of the venue did a complete 180. The Girls & Boys Chicago party was everything I’d hoped for and more, bringing the best of the best in local talent together with heavy hitters Switch (of Major Lazer fame) and Downlink. The night kicked off in proper form with a killer set from Chicago’s own CENOB1TE (it's okay if you've never heard of them — this was their first show ever), from the moment they took the stage, it was clear that this would be a night like no other.

Cody Simpson with Greyson Chance

Walking into the House Of Blues on a Friday behind a gaggle of 12-year-olds with mommy in tow was exactly what I expected when I decided to see Greyson Chance and Cody Simpson. Even still, the image threw me as I hadn’t been at a pop concert like that since I was 10 when I saw N’sync. But the energy that these girls put into their signs, a few outfitted with lighting, and the intensity to which they would scream every lyric along with these boys was amazing to witness.
